Greetings friends of the Columbus Theatre. Great news!
Many of you know our friend Thea Shaheen and have heard about how she was double-crossed by her insurance company. After waiting a year for her gender affirmation surgery and 3 preparatory visits to San Francisco to work with a specialist Blue Cross Blue Shield gave her two days notice that they were reversing their authorization of the surgery. She had bags packed, plane tickets for herself and family, hotels and had been counting down the days.
It’s pretty terrible thing they did, but Thea never lost her cool. She just had a weird sad vacation trying to find out what happened and looking into legal options. Everyone told her the same thing. The insurance company wrote the small print and there is no legal recourse.
Yet the story has a happy ending. Did you see this Daily Beast article last week (http://
Blue Cross have apologized and insist this was a case of a “glitch” between “computers and humans” and not a case of discrimination. Given their 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, we have no reason to suspect otherwise. We would like to thank Blue Cross for doing the right thing for our friend!!!
We are so happy for Thea and her birthday is coming up Jan 27. Let’s have a show / birthday party and help raise back the money she lost so she can make another trip to San Fransisco in April!*
